Standing Desk Won't Go Up: Reset and Error Code Fixes
A standing desk that stops lifting is usually thermal cutout, overload, or lost calibration rather than a dead motor. How to tell them apart and reset it.
If your standing desk won’t go up, record the display first, identify the desk and keypad, and check power, clearance, and load before attempting the manufacturer’s reset. A reset prompt is different from a hardware fault, and the same error string can mean different things on different models.

These are starting checks, not diagnoses. A blank display does not prove the motor has failed, and a successful reset does not rule out an intermittent connection problem.
ASr or RESET on an UPLIFT desk
UPLIFT’s quick-reset instructions identify ASr on display keypads and RESET on the Advanced Paddle as reset indicators.
For the quick-reset procedure documented there:
- Clear the entire area beneath the desk.
- Hold the down control for about ten seconds until the documented prompt appears, then release.
- Hold down again until the desk lowers slightly, rises slightly, and stops.

RST on a Vari desk
Vari’s panel-code guide separates current Electric Standing Desk models, older purchases, and the Essential model. Match the section to your desk.
For the current models in that guide, hold down for roughly five seconds to obtain RST, release, then hold down through the bottom-stop movement until the normal height display returns. The guide gives 25.0 as the completion display for that group; it is not a universal lowest height for all desks.
Clear the movement path first. A reset is a controlled procedure at the desk, not an unattended command.

For example, E02 is not enough information to order a replacement column. First establish which desk generated it and which code list applies. Record the full model and display together so a support request cannot be mistaken for a different controller.
Step 1: Check power and accessible cables
For a blank display, check that the desk is plugged into a working outlet and any relevant switch is on. If an ordinary plug or outlet looks damaged, discontinue use rather than troubleshooting it electrically.
Disconnect mains power before inspecting or reseating accessible low-voltage plugs. Note which cable belongs to each original port. Check the keypad lead and both motor connections for incomplete seating, pinching, or tension.
Inspect the cable route while the desk is stationary. A plug that looks seated can still have a cable pulled tight by an accessory or trapped against a bracket. Correct the routing before restoring power.
Do not open the control box, splice motor cables, or drive one connected column while leaving the other disconnected. Unequal movement can rack the assembly. Port swapping or column isolation belongs in a manufacturer-directed procedure for the exact frame.
Step 2: Respect a thermal or duty-cycle lockout
Repeated movement during assembly or cable routing can reach the desk’s duty-cycle limit. Let it rest for the period stated in its own documentation before another attempt.
The UPLIFT V2-Commercial manual gives a two-minutes-on, eighteen-minutes-rest example. That is a motor-operation limit, not a suggested frequency for normal posture changes.
Do not keep pressing the controls during the rest period to see whether the desk has recovered. Afterward, make a normal adjustment with the path clear. If the same fault returns during ordinary use, record the circumstances rather than repeatedly cycling the frame.

Step 3: Check the complete moving load
Review the capacity definition in the desk manual. Some figures apply to equipment above a supplied top; others describe the frame’s total lifting load. Count the appropriate desktop weight before comparing your equipment with the limit.

With the desk stable and stationary, remove nonessential items so the load falls within the documented allowance. Do not repeatedly add weight until the mechanism stalls to “find” its limit. If it still will not lift a permitted load after the approved checks, contact support.

Step 4: Inspect the travel path
A rising desk can encounter shelves, window ledges, wall-mounted equipment, or cables fixed to the room. A lowering desk can encounter chair arms, drawer units, or brackets below the surface.
Look from both sides and behind the desk. Check the path of a monitor arm as well as the desktop itself. Leave slack for connections between moving and fixed equipment.

Step 5: Follow the matching reset instructions
Choose the manufacturer’s procedure after identifying the frame and control panel. Some resets require movement to the lowest stop, so clear the full lowering path even if you normally use only part of the range.
Remain at the controls and follow the documented completion cue. If the desk will not move down, do not assume a longer button hold will solve a power or mechanical problem.

When to stop resetting
Stop operating the desk and consult support if it develops grinding, visible damage, burning odors, significant tilt, or movement from only one column. A recurring code after the documented reset also deserves a support review.
Prepare the model, control-box identifier, purchase record, exact code, and a description of the failed movement. Record which basic checks you completed. Do not publish serial numbers or purchase documents in a public comment.

Repair or replace the frame?
